| One song I found that I think relates to The Maze Runner is Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. I believe the song is talking about pushing through tough challenges like Thomas and the Gladers had to do in the book. The starting verse in the song is, " I'm waking up to ash and dust", which reminded me of Thomas getting out of the box not knowing where he was and how he would have to start over with no memory. The whole song is about waking up to a new beginning and having to overcome a new age of challenges. Everyone who was in the Glade came from the box not knowing anyhing bu their name. Everyone had to Another song I found was Come With Me Know reminds me of Thomas and his perusing behavior. The song to me is saying watch what I do and follow me, as if leading someone. throughout the book Thomas is curious and wants to solve the maze and get out no matter the cost. The song makes me think of someone who wants to fight and someone who is ready to be brave and explore the maze. |

Like the novel Lord of the Flies, the novel The Maze Runner has a similar theme, civilization vs savagery. Savagery can be found throughout the book in MANY different ways. There are tons of examples of savagery such as, Ben's banishment into the maze, the death of the boy who tried to go down the box shoot, and the way Gally acts towards Thomas. Just to start out Ben's banishment wasn't exactly civilized. The leaders of the boys pushed him out the maze doors with a wooden pole, basically sending him to his death. What Ben did to deserve this punishment? He broke one of the rules of the Gade, never harm another Glader. Thomas was the one Ben attack, but this was only because Ben was stung by a Griever, a giant monster like thing that lurks with hundreds more in the maze. Ben went through something called the changing which brought back memories before he was sent to the maze. These memories had Thomas in them and were apparently bad. So, Ben attacks Thomas thinking he is doing the right thing. No one really agreed so Ben was sent into the maze to his doom. But not all is bad in the Glade. Some of the boys have been in there for a couple of years working on a steady civilization and government. Everyone has a specified job so people are not running around crazy getting killed by Grievers. The Gladers are living steady lives in their perfect civilization while trying to find a way out of the maze. The civilization immediately faces problems right after Thomas arrives causing savagery to start occurring in the book. This doesn't mean there was no savagery before Thomas arrived, but things got much worse. When I was reading through the novel, The Maze Runner by James Dashner, I found the setting very similar to, Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Many of the character in both books are parallels to each other. For example, Thomas is an obvious parallel to Ralph, one of the characters in Golding's book. Both characters are the leader and protagonist in the books and are key to the plot. Another pair I find similar is Chuck and Piggy. These two characters are almost identical even their character features. Both boys are chubby, smart, not that athletic, and are the holders of innocence in the books. In Lord of the Flies, Piggy is killed when a rock flies down a mountain side and hits him off a cliff to his ultimate doom, thus taking the innocence out of the picture. In The Maze Runner, Chuck is killed by Gally, the comparison to Jack in LOTF, taking away the always needed presence of innocence. Not only are the character alike, but the plot is also. In each book a group boys are stuck in a situation where they must find a way off an island or out of a maze. I thought they were so close I researched it, and it turns out James Dashner's inspiration for The Maze Runner was Lord of the Flies. Definitely explains the similarities.
The Maze Runner is the first of four books that make up a large series. The first book, The Maze Runner, starts out with the main character, Thomas, flying upward in a small elevator. about thirty minutes in to Thomas's elevator ride, it stops, two doors open at the top and a bright light shines in his face. Thomas sees a large group of boys surrounding the top.The characters are made up of all boys and one girl, all having important roles as the story plays out. I found that many of the characters' features in the book related to those of some of the characters in Lord of the Flies by William Golding. A major relation I found is how alike Chuck, from The Maze Runner, and Piggy, from Lord of the Flies are.
